Our annual Stammtisch excursion took us this time to the country of the reigning world champion: Italy. The destination was Udine . Eight of us set off early in the morning at 06:00 towards the south. After a 6-hour train ride and 2 pallets of beer, they arrived in Udine.
As the match did not take place until Sunday, they used the Saturday to go sightseeing in the city. In the end, they ended up at the annual wine and asparagus festival. With live music and a glass of wine or two, we spent a pleasant evening in the town square in Udine.
The next day, after a good breakfast, we took a taxi to the Stadio Friuli. Ticket sales in Italy are currently somewhat difficult due to various incidents. Tickets can only be purchased in person and with a passport. The name is printed on the ticket and must be shown later together with the passport at the entrance to the stadium. So it took a while until everyone had their tickets.
After that, we started a morning pint in an adjacent pub garden before heading to the stadium at around 14:00. The stadium itself is already a few years old and, due to its dilapidation, is more reminiscent of the Linz Gugl than of a former World Cup stadium (1990). The seats are unworthy of a Seria A stadium and there was no sweeping in the stadium.
Surprisingly, Udine were in total control of the match. Fiorentina did not show that they are still fighting for a Champions League place. In the end, Udinies deserved to win 3:1.
The number of fans at the Stadio Friauli is rather below average, and the stadium size does the rest. The atmosphere here is almost non-existent. Even in Austria there is more going on.
