A game in Portsmouth was on the programme on Friday evening. We travelled to the south coast of England by train early in the morning. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't as kind to us as it had been the previous days. It kept raining and the wind did the rest to make staying outside very uncomfortable.
So the first stop was in one of the historic pubs where it was a lot more pleasant. When the weather improved a little, we set off to visit the D-Day Museum. After this cultural visit, we set off on foot towards Fratton Park. After a stopover for beer and burgers, we arrived at the stadium in the early evening.
They were actually looking forward to seeing the Austrian Nicolas Schmid in goal for Portsmouth, who had joined from FC Blau-Weiß Linz at the start of the season. Unfortunately, he had been injured in the previous round, so Jordan Archer stood between the posts against Sheffield Wednesday.
Portsmouth kept the game open in the first half and also had the better chances. Just before half-time, Connor Ogilvie scored the acclaimed opening goal for Pompey. Unfortunately, they were unable to carry this momentum into the second half, with Josh Windass equalising in the 55th minute after a fine combination.
From this point onwards, Sheffield had the upper hand, but missed numerous chances. It was almost telling that the opening goal came in the 70th minute with a powerful shot from Michael Smith. The numerous visiting fans from Sheffield who had travelled with them were naturally beside themselves with excitement.
Portsmouth tried everything after that, but nothing worthwhile emerged and so it remained a bitter home defeat. It would probably have looked better with Schmid ;-)
After the game, we quickly headed for the train station, as we still had a long journey home to London on the programme...
