After visiting Arsenal on Friday evening, they took the train to Southampton on Saturday morning. There they wanted to watch Ralph Hasenhüttl's men against Burnley FC. Southampton are currently playing a mixed season and have only managed one win. So it was time for us to bring our compatriots some luck.
On arrival at Southampton Central, we set off on a short walk along the harbour and through the city in the direction of the St. Marys Stadium - not without stopping off at the pub, of course. The stadium was already well filled, a sight doubly beautiful after the long Corona time-out. After the brass band had played the famous "when the saints go marching in", the game finally started.
But the game started anything but well for Southampton. Burnley were in control from the start and took the lead after 13 minutes through Maxwel Cornet. After that it was Burnley who put the stamp on the game. It was all the more important that Valentino Livramento scored the 1-1 goal shortly before the break. But Ralph Hasenhüttl had enough reason for a proper half-time speech.
And it seemed to have worked, because after the restart Southampton had their strongest phase in this game. Already after 5 minutes it was Armando Broja who gave the Saints the lead. And also after that Southampton made a lot of steam and you thought that this game will tip now. But that's when Burnley put a damper on the game with Maxwel Cornet's second goal of the match.
After that, the game unfortunately lost steam and there were fewer and fewer penalty area scenes. Towards the end of the game, neither team seemed to be willing to secure the 3 points. Therefore, in the end, it remained a fair draw, which does not really help any team.
After the final whistle, we piled into the city centre on foot, where we enjoyed a few Red Stripe Jamaican lagers before taking the train back to London.
