About the Club:
AFC Wimbledon Ladies: A History of Success in London Football
The AFC Wimbledon Ladies are a prominent women's football team based in London, England. Founded in 2002, the club has quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with in the women's football scene, both in London and throughout the country.
The club's roots can be traced back to the historic AFC Wimbledon men's team, which was formed in 1889 and played in the English Football League for over a century. In 2002, the men's team was moved to Milton Keynes, much to the dismay of the fans. In response, a group of supporters formed a new club, AFC Wimbledon, which has since risen through the ranks to become a successful semi-professional team.
In 2002, the ladies' team was also formed, under the name Wimbledon Ladies FC. They initially played in the Greater London Women's Football League, but quickly gained promotion to the FA Women's Premier League Southern Division. In 2014, the club changed its name to AFC Wimbledon Ladies to align with the men's team.
Since then, the AFC Wimbledon Ladies have gone from strength to strength. They have won the FA Women's Premier League Cup twice, in 2015 and 2017, and have consistently finished in the top half of the FA Women's National League Southern Premier Division.
The club's home ground is the Kingsmeadow Stadium in Kingston upon Thames, which has a capacity of over 4,800. The stadium has also been used by the men's team, as well as the now defunct Wimbledon FC.
The AFC Wimbledon Ladies have also produced several players who have gone on to play for the England women's national team, including Gemma Davison and Fran Kirby. The club has a strong focus on developing young talent, and has a successful youth academy that has produced players for both the ladies' and men's teams.
As they continue to make their mark on the women's football scene, the AFC Wimbledon Ladies remain a symbol of resilience and determination in the face of adversity. With their strong ties to the historic AFC Wimbledon club and a passionate fanbase, they are sure to achieve even greater success in the years to come.
