About the Club:
The football club SV Darmstadt 98 - A rich history of ups and downs
Located in the city of Darmstadt in the German state of Hesse, SV Darmstadt 98 is a professional football club that has a long and eventful history. Founded in 1898, the club has seen many successes and failures, making it one of the most intriguing and beloved clubs in German football.
The club's early years were marked by local dominance, winning the Hesse Cup (now known as the Kreispokal) multiple times in the early 1900s. However, it wasn't until the 1950s that SV Darmstadt 98 achieved national recognition by reaching the final of the German Amateur Championship in 1950 and 1951.
In the 1970s, the club experienced a period of decline, playing in lower leagues and facing financial difficulties. But in 1978, Hans Kessler, a local entrepreneur, became the club's president and transformed it into a professional football club. This led to a successful run in the 2. Bundesliga, with the club achieving promotion to the Bundesliga in 1978 and a third-place finish in the 1978-79 season.
Despite this success, the club was unable to maintain its top-flight status and was relegated back to the 2. Bundesliga in 1982. The next few decades saw the club fluctuate between the 2. Bundesliga and the lower leagues, with the exception of a brief stint in the Bundesliga in the 1990s.
But it wasn't until the 2010s that SV Darmstadt 98 made a remarkable comeback and captured the hearts of football fans across Germany. In the 2013-14 season, the club gained promotion to the 2. Bundesliga and in the 2014-15 season, they achieved promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in 33 years.
Under the leadership of coach Dirk Schuster, the club defied all odds and had a successful run in the Bundesliga, finishing in a respectable 14th place in the 2015-16 season. However, they were unable to maintain their top-flight status and were relegated back to the 2. Bundesliga at the end of the 2016-17 season.
Today, SV Darmstadt 98 continues to compete in the 2. Bundesliga and has a strong fan base that supports the team through thick and thin. The club's home stadium, the Merkur Spiel-Arena, is known for its unique atmosphere and has a capacity of over 17,000 spectators.
With a rich history and a passionate fan base, SV Darmstadt 98 continues to strive for success and is a beloved symbol of the city of Darmstadt.
