About the Club:
The FSV Zwickau: A Historic and Resilient Football Club
The FSV Zwickau is a professional football club based in the city of Zwickau, Germany. Founded in 1912, the club has a long and rich history, with many ups and downs that have shaped its character and fan base. The club is currently competing in the 3. Liga, the third tier of German football.
The early days of the FSV Zwickau were marked by a series of mergers and name changes. The club was originally founded as FC Planitz in 1912, but merged with SC Planitz in 1919 to form VfB Planitz. In 1933, the club was once again renamed to SpVgg Planitz and then to SG Planitz in 1945.
It wasn't until 1948 that the club finally became known as BSG Motor Zwickau, a name that would stick for almost four decades. During this time, the club was part of the East German football league system and achieved moderate success, winning the East German Cup in 1963 and reaching the finals of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1975.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the club was renamed once again to FV Zwickau and joined the German football league system. In 1994, the club merged with FSV Zwickau, a team with a long-standing history in the city, and became the FSV Zwickau we know today.
Despite facing financial difficulties and relegations in the following years, the FSV Zwickau has shown great resilience and determination. In the 2016/2017 season, the club achieved promotion to the 3. Liga for the first time in its history. This was a historic moment for both the club and the city, with fans flooding the streets to celebrate the achievement.
The FSV Zwickau's home ground is the Stadion Zwickau, also known as GGZ Arena, which has a capacity of 10,134 spectators. The club's traditional rival is Chemnitzer FC, with whom they compete in the Saxony Derby, a highly anticipated match for both teams and their fans.
Over the years, the FSV Zwickau has produced many talented players, some of whom went on to play for top German clubs such as Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart. The club also has a strong youth academy, which has produced players for the German national team.
Today, the FSV Zwickau continues to be a beloved and respected club in Germany, with a loyal fan base and a rich history that serves as a reminder of the club's determination and spirit. As they continue to compete in the 3. Liga, the FSV Zwickau will undoubtedly continue to make their mark in German football.
