About the Club:
The SK Slavia Praha: A Historic Football Club in the Heart of Prague
The SK Slavia Praha, also known as Slavia Prague, is one of the most popular and successful football clubs in the Czech Republic. Located in the capital city of Prague, the club has a rich history that dates back to 1892.
The SK Slavia Praha was founded by a group of students from the Gymnázium sv. Štěpána in Prague. At that time, the club was known as ACOS Praha and played their first official match against the famous English club, Southampton F.C. in 1896. The match ended in a 0-0 draw, but it marked the beginning of a long and illustrious journey for the SK Slavia Praha.
Throughout the early 1900s, the club underwent several name changes, from ACOS Praha to AFK Vršovice and then to SK Slavia Vršovice. But in 1927, the club settled on its current name, SK Slavia Praha.
One of the most significant moments in the club's history was in 1934, when they became the first Czechoslovakian team to win an international trophy – the Central European Cup. Led by legendary player Antonín Puč, SK Slavia Praha defeated the Italian club, Ambrosiana-Inter, 8-4 on aggregate to lift the trophy.
The SK Slavia Praha has also had a strong rivalry with the city's other major football club, Sparta Prague. The rivalry between the two clubs, known as the Prague derby, is considered one of the fiercest and most historic derbies in European football.
In recent years, the SK Slavia Praha has continued to add to its trophy cabinet. In the 2018-19 season, they won the Czech First League title for the 19th time and also made it to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Europa League.
Today, the SK Slavia Praha plays their home matches at the Sinobo Stadium, which has a capacity of 20,232 spectators. The stadium, located in the Vršovice district of Prague, has been the home of the club since 2008.
The SK Slavia Praha has also produced several notable players over the years, including Czech legends such as Vladimír Šmicer, Tomáš Rosický, and Patrik Berger. The club has also had a strong influence on the Czech national team, with many of its players representing the country on the international stage.
As one of the oldest and most successful football clubs in the Czech Republic, the SK Slavia Praha continues to inspire and entertain fans with their exciting style of play. With a rich history and a bright future ahead, the club will undoubtedly continue to be an integral part of the vibrant football culture in Prague.
